Q&A with Costume Designer Anna Mary Scott Robbins and Co-costume Designer Maja Meschede.

Costume Designer Anna Mary Scott Robbins and Co-costume Designer Maja Meschede joined Fashion & Cinema’s Director Joana Granero Sánchez to enlighten us about the work behind the creation of the spectacular costumes featured in the film as well as the importance of historical acuracy in the evolution of the Downton Abbey story.

The new and much-awaited cinematic return of Downton Abbey comes with exciting stories incluing a moving picture filmed at Downton Abbey itself, which brings a different kind of royalty from the first film and a grand journey to the South of France, where the Dowager Countess has, mysteriously for everyone, inherited a wonderful villa.

ABOUT ANNA MARY SCOTT ROBBINS: Costume Designer

Anna Mary Scott Robbins is a costume designer who has designed costumes for numerous award winning productions and continues to build a solid reputation for creative flair and excellence within the world of film and television.

Originally from Scotland, and currently London based, Anna continues to work across the UK and has been designing for the film and television industry since 2005.

In 2013 Anna took over as costume designer for Downton Abbey, designing the fifth and final sixth series. She was nominated for a Primetime Emmy award for her designs on both series.

Anna went on to design costumes for the feature Downton Abbey, earning nominations for the Critics Choice Award and The Costume Designers Guild Awards. More recent design credits include Last Letter From Your Lover, Oscar winning film The Father directed by Florian Zeller and the most recent film Downton Abbey: A New Era.

ABOUT MAJA MESCHEDE: Co-Costume Designer

Maja Meschede has had an incredibly diverse design career across both television and film. Her most recognized work is from CDG nominated Black Mirror: USS Callister.

Her recent television credits include Catherine the Great starring Helen Mirren which debuted on Sky Atlantic and HBO Max and Intergalactic which was released in the UK on Sky One and on the new Peacock streaming service in the US.

In film, she recently designed costumes for Hadi Hajaig’s Vengeance is Mine and Blue Iguana starring Sam Rockwell. Maja also has an impressive collection of Assistant Costume Designer credits including, David Leitch’s Atomic Blonde, David Yates The Legend of Tarzan, Jon M. Chu’s Now You See Me 2, Robert Stromberg’s Maleficent and Brian Percival’s The Book Thief.

ABOUT JOANA GRANERO SÁNCHEZ

Joana Granero Sánchez is the founder and co-director of Fashion & Cinema. Born and raised in Spain, she spent some time in Italy before moving to London, where she created the London Spanish Film Festival in 2005. She started Fashion & Cinema in 2012, producing and curating its content. She also works as an independent curator and producer as well as a lecturer (New York Fashion Institut of Technology, Florence).
