France/USA | 2025 | 152 min
Set against the turmoil of post-Soviet Russia in the early 1990s, a brilliant young man, Vadim Baranov, forges his path. Beginning as an artist and later reinventing himself as a reality TV producer, he rises to become the spin doctor for a little-known KGB officer on the ascent: Vladimir Putin.
At the heart of power, Baranov helps shape a new Russia, blurring the lines between truth and lies, belief and manipulation. Only the enigmatic Ksenia remains beyond his control, drawing him away from this perilous world.
Years later, having withdrawn into silence and mystery, Baranov finally breaks his silence, revealing the dark secrets of the regime he helped build.
Based on Giuliano da Empoli’s book, The Wizard of the Kremlin is a fascinating invitation by Assayas to reflect on modern politics.
