Legendary Janty Yates joins filmmaker Sir Ridley Scott again in what is now their sixteenth collaboration since Gladiator in 2000, which won her an Academy Award for Best Costume Design, on the new Gladiator II. Set against the backdrop of Rome’s splendour and decadence, the film is a fascinating story of power, revenge and honour.
Janty will be joined by David Crossman, designer of the military costumes with whom she already worked on Scott’s Napoleon, and writer and curator Keith Lodwick in a Q&A after the screening of the film.
GLADIATOR II
dir: Ridley Scott
with Pedro Pascal, Paul Mescal, Connie Nielsen, Denzel Washington
UK/US | 2024 | 148 min
Years after witnessing the death of the revered hero Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius is forced to enter the Colosseum after his home is conquered by the tyrannical Emperors who now lead Rome with an iron fist.
With rage in his heart and the future of the Empire at stake, Lucius must look to his past to find strength and honour to return the glory of Rome to its people.
A marvellous era to work in, according to Janty Yates, designing the costumes for Gladiator’s Ancient Rome is much more than tunics and togas and covers Egypt, Carthage, Babylon and plenty of military costumes for which Trajan’s Column in Rome has been of great inspiration.

ABOUT DAVID CROSSMAN
David Crossman began his career in costume after leaving school to join the distinguished costume company Berman’s & Nathans, where he spent nine years developing his costume knowledge. His first large freelance project was working as the Military Costumer on Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan, subsequently working again with Spielberg on two other occasions, War Horse and Lincoln.
Amongst Crossman’s other feature film credits are many notable films: Mike Leigh’s Topsy Turvy, Atonement, La Vie en Rose, Harry Potter 2,3 & 4, Maleficent, Mr Turner and James Bond. These films have given him the chance of working with a wide range of leading directors, such as Mike Leigh, Ridley Scott, Alfonso Cuaron, Ron Howard, Gillian Armstrong and Joe Wright.
In 2013, Crossman was approached to supervise the new series of Star Wars films, which began with JJ Abrams’ The Force Awakens. During that time, he and co-designer Glyn Dillon were asked to design the two prequel films in the series – Rogue One and Solo.
After six years of working consistently on the Star Wars franchise, he returned to one of his favourite subjects, the First World War, co-designing the Sam Mendes film 1917 with Jacqueline Durran. This was followed by co-designing the Batsuit for Matt Reeves’ The Batman. After completing work on Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Crossman then began work on Ridley Scott’s Napoleon, for which he was nominated for an Academy award alongside Janty Yates. They then went on to work together again on Gladiator II.
