Hot Milk: Q&A with Costume Designer Sophie O’Neill

Colours palettes, shapes, references… learn about the process of creating costumes for the complex characters of Hot Milk during this particular summer trip to the South of Spain.

Costume designer Sophie O’Neill will join Davina Catt for a Q&A after the screening of the film.

Rose and her daughter Sofia travel to the Spanish seaside town of Almería to consult with the shamanic Dr. Gomez, a physician who could possibly hold the cure to Rose’s mystery illness, which has left her bound to a wheelchair.

But in the sultry atmosphere of this sun-bleached town Sofia, who has been trapped by her mother’s illness all her life, finally starts to shed her inhibitions, enticed by the persuasive charms of enigmatic traveller Ingrid.

ABOUT SOPHIE O’NEILL

Costume Designer Sophie O’Neill grew up in London graduating from the London College of Fashion in 2012 with a 1st Class Honours degree in Costume Design for Performance.

Sophie first established herself as a Costume Buyer Assistant Costume Designer and Costume Supervisor working on several internationally acclaimed and award-winning feature films such as ‘Jawbone’ for Thomas Napper ‘Stan & Ollie’ for Jon S. Baird and ‘The Selfish Giant’ which marked her first collaboration with Clio Barnard.

After working as Assistant Costume Designer to Michele Clapton on ‘The King’s Man’ for Matthew Vaughn ‘The Secret Garden’ for Marc Munden and ‘Mamma Mia! Here we go Again’ for Ol Parker Sophie designed her first feature ‘Ali & Ava’ collaborating once again with director Clio Barnard.  Sophie has since designed ‘The Outfit’ for Graham Moore starring Mark Rylance Zoey Deutch Dylan O’Brien and Johnny Flynn. This project gave Sophie the opportunity to work with Campbell Carey Head Cutter and Creative Director of Huntsman Savile Row to produce bespoke suits for Mark Rylance and Dylan O’Brien.

Sophie’s passion for storytelling in independent film has led her to work with several outstanding directors. Most recently she has designed Moin Hussain’s debut feature ‘Sky Peals’ Rebecca Lenkiewicz’s ‘Hot Milk’ starring Emma Mackey Vicky Krieps and Fiona Shaw and Dylan Southern’s ‘The Thing with Feathers’ starring Benedict Cumberbatch.

ABOUT DAVINA CATT

Davina is a journalist, writer, director.

Davina writes for leading publications including Vogue UK and International editions, Financial Times, as well as being contributing editor at new biannual title, Violet, alongside internationally recognised actors/scriptwriters.  Davina is regularly asked to conduct talks and be part of panels at venues from BAFTA, V&A to Conde Nast college, including recently an in conversation event with legendary sixties model, muse and actress, Pattie Boyd.

Davina has taken her experience with writing, narrative and film to write and direct an arts based documentary, which was screened across Curzon cinemas.

She has also appeared in campaigns for designers such as Lara Bohinc MBE, been photographed by globally recognised names from Rankin to Mike Figgis, and her body of work has been featured in titles including Vogue Italia, Tatler, Harpers Bazaar UK, American Elle.
