How to dress eccentrics and musicians in a secluded island? Costume designer Gabriela Yiaxis will share with us insights into her creative journey creating the costumes for The Ballad of Wallis Island, as well as about her intense and varied career working, not only in film and TV, but also as a fashion stylist, in a Q&A after the screening of the film.

The Ballad of Wallis Island follows Charles, an eccentric lottery winner who lives alone on a remote island and dreams of getting his favorite musicians, Mortimer-McGwyer back together.

His fantasy quickly turns into reality when the band-mates and former lovers accept his invitation to play a private show at his home on Wallis Island. Old tensions resurface as Charles tries desperately to salvage his dream gig.

ABOUT GABRIELA YIAXIS

Gabriela Yiaxis has worked as a costume designer and stylist internationally for over 15 years, taking characters from script to screen with a distinct blend of authenticity, style and realism.

Originally from Brazil, and from a Lebanese background, Gabriela studied architecture and then fashion at university before moving to costume design. She settled in London over ten years ago and began working with Barry Kamen and other members of the iconic DIY post-punk movement “Buffalo”, where she immersed herself in modern British subcultures and mastered the art of mixing old with new, sportswear with high couture, craft with digital, minimalism with opulence.

Gabriela’s diversity and experience has allowed her to move effortlessly between fields: from period to contemporary, narrative to fashion and film to TV commercials. She has worked with some of the most respected film and TVC directors and photographers in the industry including Tom Tagholm, David Shane, Stephen Frears, Robert McKillop, Otto Stupakoff. She has also worked with artists such as Carey Mulligan, Hellen Mirren, Harriet Walter, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ben Whishaw, David Mitchell, Stella McCartney, Matthew MacFadyen, Kate Moss, and Paul McCartney, under the belt of the most esteemed names in film, art, fashion and advertising companies, including Films, BFI, BBC Films, Vogue, Arena Homme, POP Magazine, Whitechapel Gallery, Tate Modern, Stink, Park Pictures, Somesuch, Furlined, Rogue Films and O Positive. Transitioning between short, feature films, fashion editorials, and TV commercials gave her the experience to handle A-List cast and creative high expectations from directors along the ability of work across all budget levels.

Gabriela also owns an eclectic mix of contemporary and period stock which she uses whenever possible as an alternative to disposable fashion and to help keep the industry more sustainable.
